Up early and ready to go, today was to be a relatively short day to the city of Dunkirk. I stopped in Erie for some breakfast and then set off for the new York border. About 20 miles later, i was there. The scenery the whole day was really nice. Lake Erie on one side, vineyards on the other. Cycling past the vineyards made me wonder if they needed any help pruning. Although looking at my past record of pruning in new Zealand, they would probably be better off without me.
The empire state produced very nice riding the whole day. I stopped in Barcelona for lunch and was off again. The next section was an inland detour due to a closed road, this meant slightly more hills but not too bad.
I arrived in Dunkirk in mid afternoon. Again i had arranged a warmshowers host for the evening, but we agreed for me to arrive around 6pm, so i headed for the beach to pass the time. On the way to beach, i got ice cream from Tim Hortons (preparing for Canada). I sat by the beach for the rest of the afternoon.
It was now time to head to my hosts for the evening. I was warmly greeted by KimMarie and her daughter Kinnan. They immediately made me feel very welcome. Then Tim returned home from a bike ride. KimMarie had prepared an excellent vegetarian meal, mostly using local produce. It was nice to swap cycling and travelling stories with KimMarie and Tim. The evening past and it was time for bed. Today was probably the best days riding so far, a nice relax on the beach and then a really nice evening with a really nice family. A good start to new York, hopefully it continues, Im gonna be in it a while.
