Day 31: Pissing in the wind

Really cold last night, still got a good sleep, it takes more than a little cold to interrupt my sleep. It did make it a little difficult to get out of the tent and get going. I was keen to get going though, before the wind picked up. I said goodbye to Garrett and Sara and was off. Hopefully will run into them again. Today’s forecast was for strong winds from the south east. Ultimately i didn’t leave early enough to beat the wind, from the first mile to the last, today was constant head/side wind. Turning flat into uphill, downhill into uphill and uphill into really uphill. The miles crawled by. On the plus side, i was feeling a bit better and stronger, but the wind was relentless. The roads were flatter, not flat, but flatter, with the occasional rolling hills. The start of the day saw a return to the string of obscenities trailing behind me, but don’t worry, no one could hear me, not even god can hear you here. It was only day 3 in north dakota(notice that north dakota has lost its capital letters, it doesn’t deserve them), if it continued like this, the five day plan to cross the state could become a two week reality.

The miles went on, the aim for the day was Mandan, a city just before the state capital Bismarck. The rolling hills continued, but by now the top of a big hill(revealing the next set of rolling hills) was not met with the customary swearing, instead now it was simply shoulders slumped, as the legs kept going before i was blown back down the hill.

I have noticed that the more enjoyable a day is, the more pictures there are, there are no pictures from today.

I struggled into Mandan and set about finding a motel. The motel turned out to be right through town, adding about 5 miles onto the day, but i made it. I ordered a pizza hut and watched the Nfl. Tough day, hoping for better tomorrow.
